Halogen-bonded solvates of tetrahaloethynyl cavitands†

Halogen bonding (XB) has been receiving considerably increasing attention as it provides a complementary interaction to hydrogen bonding (HB). XB has been proven to play crucial roles in supramolecular chemistry, nanoscience, biosystems, and functional materials. Its directionality and tunability make XB an important noncovalent interaction, geometrically and thermodynamically, similar to HB; h...

Design and synthesis of cationic antimicrobial peptides with improved activity and selectivity against Vibrio spp.

Extensive use of classical antibiotics has led to the growing emergence of many resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria. Evidence has suggested that cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are of greatest potential to represent a new class of antibiotics. The largest group of AMPs comprises peptides that fold into an amphipathic alpha-helical conformation when interacting with the target microo...

Cavitands: Molecules with Enhanced Selectivity for Chem/bio Detection

The selective response of supramolecular structures, cavitands, is demonstrated using a sensitive optical transduction scheme, surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The methylene bridged cavitands (MeCav) with shallow cavities do not complex aromatic vapors, the pyrazine bridged cavitands (PzCav) show intermediate selectivity whereas the quinoxaline bridged cavitands (QxCav) with the deepest cavitie...

Toward the soil poultice and a new separations methodology: Rebinding of macrocyclic metal complexes to molecularly imprinted polymers specifically templated via noncovalent interactions

The siderophore-based extraction of iron from the soil by bacteria is proposed as a model for a new separation methodology labeled the soil poultice, a molecular device that would selectively retrieve the complex of a targeted metal ion. In this first feasibility study we describe the synthesis and characterization of molecularly imprinted polymers based on noncovalent interactions, and their a...

Interior Modification of Nano-Porous Fillers to Fabricate High Performance Mixed Matrix Membranes

A new method is developed to enhance the gas separation properties of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) by interior modification of an inorganic nano-porous particle. Ship-in-a-bottle (SIB), as a novel synthesis strategy, is considered to encapsulate a polyaza macrocyclic Ag-ligand complex into the zeolite Y, which is resulted in a new host-guest nano-composite. It is consequently incorporated into...
